2014 Bill Fitzwater Memorial Scholarship Winners
Bill Fitzwater graduated from Prattsburgh Central School in 1983 where he played four years of Varsity baseball, basketball, and one year of soccer. He attended Monroe Community College and later earned his BS degree in Accounting from St. Bonaventure University where he also played baseball. He started his accounting career at Taylor Winery continuing on to Borden, The Birkett Mills, Cargill, and Technical Machine Services.
Although Bill was trained as an accountant his real passion was for sports and he continued to stay active with sports when he returned to Steuben County. He was a Steuben County Boys Basketball official for more than 10 years and an assistant coach for Prattsburgh boys baseball. He also was a coach for Hammondsport’s Little League, Cinderella Softball, Girls Modified Softball, AAU Girls Basketball, and was involved with the Jr. Lakers boys and girls. He had a natural gift for coaching. His compassionate and positive attitude served the youth of Steuben County as he taught them the skills of the game along with the life-long skill of respect for others.
Bill always appreciated the positive impact sports had on his success and through his own hard work and determination he became very successful not only in the individual games he played and coached but in the game of life. He was an ardent supporter of Section V athletics and the Steuben County Athletic League in particular.
This scholarship is intended to honor Bill’s memory with financial assistance to a senior boy or girl in the Steuben County League who through hard work and determination will be graduating and attending an institution of higher learning. Applicants were asked to write an essay describing how the positive impact of participation in high school sports has helped them learn teamwork and helped them academically.
Presenting the plaques to this year’s winners are Tammy Fitzwater and children Troy and Olivia and Jeff Gifford, President of The Birkett Mills. We are pleased to announce that this year’s winners of the Bill Fitzwater Memorial Scholarship are Madison Whiteman of Arkport Central School and Tyler VanSkiver of Jasper Troupsburg Central School.
